This was a project brought to me by the director of The Young Americans film department.  They had hours and hours of this documentary style footage shot and he wanted to create a short film that was informational about their non-profit group, but also entertaining enough to keep people watching.  He gave me a basic script for how he wanted the piece to flow, but from there it’s pretty much all my creation.  I came up with multiple frame idea, so we could get across the most information in quick fashion.  Because I got so ambitious with it, and had such a short time to create the film, it’s the most intense editing job I’ve ever had.

With Mark Peysha, (who also produces all my Tony Robbins work) I got a chance to create a full-length documentary about a very unique soul.  The film was produced as a private piece for a 50th birthday party.  The footage was shot by friends and family, Mark wrote the script and pieced together a rough cut of the film.  My work was in tightening the film, laying in all the photos, and adding some pizzaz to the piece.  Above, you can see my favorite scene from the project, where I got to cut some old college basketball footage to Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”.

I was hired by Snap Capp to produce a short video to help sell their product, while also serving as an instructional video on how to use their new invention. This was made purely as a functional piece of video to get the ideas across, there’s nothing too creative about it. But it’s a good idea of what can be done on a micro-budget, it cost them around $100 to produce and has given them a good boost in business.

The Anthony Robbins Company has been my main client since 2007.  Above is a sample of one of the over 30 projects that I have helped produce in that time.  I work closely with Mark Peysha, who writes the scripts and directs the films.  Together we’ve created around 20 full-length documentaries featuring Tony Robbins talking one-on-one with people in need, helping them solve their problems.  We’ve also created many short films, commercials, interviews and infomercials.  My main job has been to angle cut the multi-camera shoots done at the Tony Robbins conferences, shorten them for timing purposes, and create the text graphics and montage recaps that play during the voice-over sections read by renowned psychologist Cloe Madanes.  It’s been a great learning experience.

This is the 2nd time I’ve documented the Every 15 Minutes program in Etna, CA.  Etna High School students and the local emergency services recreate a drunk driving accident at the school, teaching other students about the dangers or drinking and driving.

It‘s a pretty intense experience, they lay these kids out to look like they’ve had a bad car accident.  The police, firefighters, ambulance and coroner show up on scene and treat it like it’s a real event.  The next day, they hold a funeral, and speak about what happened.  I captured these events and interviewed those involved, trying to convey the seriousness of it all through the film.

James J. Peck is a renowned mask maker & actor, he puts on shows quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.  I was honored to work with such an artist.  I got to shoot a behind the scenes video, as he put on his show for a local high school.  That footage along with some previous shows footage and photographs, we edited together this piece for his website.

Above is less than half the work I did for DenizenTV.com - which was the most rewarding stretch of my editing career so far.  I was constantly cutting something new, constantly posting new films to their website.  I got the chance to learn about interesting companies and people in my area, and how they were making a difference in the world or just having fun.  Each project had its own challenges in how to tell their individual story.  Through the course of the films, we developed a style, so that each piece despite the differences in subject, began to have a “DenizenTV” feel to it. Most of the work was shot with the Canon 5D Mark II, a high quality digital still camera that also shoots fantastic video; with a crisp look and short depth-of-field that almost gives it a film like look.
